Home Life and Family

For most people the thought of home and family conjures pleasant memories of running through fresh cut grass and sipping lemonade served by grandmother. This is true if home was a small two-room plank home or a large ten-room plantation home. Home and family also means gathering for events like birthdays and reunions, or just visiting with cousins and neighbors on Sunday afternoon.

Early photographers often traveled through the county taking photographs of families, they would collect the money and mail the photographs to the family. This was the case with this photo taken at the Charles Upton Spivey home while he was away on business. The merchants and large farmers of the county wished to show their economic success by building larger and more elaborate homes. This two-story Victorian home with attached gazebo was built in St. Pauls by merchant and farmer, Locke Shaw. Unfortunately many homes of this era have been lost.
