Religious Life

Robeson County is dotted with churches from small wooden framed buildings with under 20 members to large brick houses of worship that boast hundreds of
members. The denominations include Baptists, Presbyterian, A.M.E. Zion, Methodist, Church of Christ, Episcopal, Catholic and Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints.

Philadelphus Presbyterian Church was organized sometime between 1797 and 1799
with Reverend Daniel Brown as its first pastor. The caption on the back of

St. George M.E. Church has served the African-Americans of Maxton since right
after the town's incorporation in 1874. It was the site of Charles Hunter's
school in 1876, he spoke in his writings of the warn Christian fellowship
enjoyed at the church during his three year stay. (Courtesy Hubbard-Tyner
